Whole Body Donation

Bequeathal/Whole Body Donation
We often receive requests from people on donating their entire body to science. LifeShare does not accept whole bodies for transplantation or research, but we are happy to refer individuals to the proper sources.

Individuals considering whole body donation are advised to make arrangements in advance with the medical school of their choice and are cautioned that organ donors cannot be whole body donors too. The phone numbers for additional information are listed below. In each case, it is the Department of Anatomy that should be contacted.

NOTE: Schools of medicine do not always have a need for human bodies for anatomical studies and may refuse to accept a donation. The family is financially responsible for transporting the body to the medical school.

Bone Marrow Donation
There is also a critical need for bone marrow donors, particularly among minority groups. Like the waiting list for people in need for organ transplants, there is a registry of people waiting for bone marrow transplants.

LifeShare does not facilitate bone marrow transplants, but we do receive a number of questions about them. For information on how to get typed for the registry or other questions regarding bone marrow donation, contact the following agencies:

The American Red Cross
(800) 228-1496

The National Marrow Donor Program
(800) Marrow-2
